Deadline Extended for Town Nomination and Voting in Rand McNally and USA TODAY's Best of the Road®
The Search Continues for the Best of the Road Towns and Places through May 30
SKOKIE, Ill., May 24, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Attention, America! Rand McNally and USA TODAY are extending the deadline to May 30, 2011 for town submission and voting and in the inaugural search for the Best of the Road. Competition is heating up among Americans with hundreds of reviews, photos and votes in an effort to get their town on the map, literally, and be named one of the best small towns in America. The inaugural search also includes a Best of the Road Rally, which will enlist five teams to drive from New York to Los Angeles this summer and compete for a grand prize of $10,000.
PUT YOUR TOWN ON THE MAP
Now through May 30, Americans can nominate and vote for their favorite towns and attractions in the Best of the Road contest. The top places -- whether it's the Best Beach, Best Chili Dog or another attraction not to be missed -- will land a permanent spot on Rand McNally's new travel Web site and be featured in the 2013 Rand McNally Road Atlas, as well as on USA TODAY's Travel Web page. Top towns will be visited and reviewed during the Best of the Road Rally this summer by five finalist teams.
THE BEST OF THE ROAD RALLY
To celebrate the Best of the Road, Rand McNally and USA TODAY are promoting an unforgettable three-week, cross-country road rally this summer. Five finalist teams composed of travelers will depart New York on June 23 en route to Los Angeles to seek out the Most Fun, Most Patriotic, Most Beautiful, Best for Food or Friendliest town in America before the big finish on July 15. They will travel scenic routes and back roads to leave no landmark unturned and no local secrets undiscovered.
Finalist teams will visit the towns in their assigned category, while fans can follow their progress through video, photos and posted updates on www.bestoftheroad.com, Facebook and Twitter. Additional coverage starting on June 23 will appear in USA TODAY and on travel.usatoday.com.
Best of the Road Rally team submission closed on May 23, but voting remains open until May 30 on www.bestoftheroad.com. Dozens of teams have uploaded a video one minute in length or less showcasing the team's skills as cross-country travelers.
Road Rally finalist teams will be selected by Rand McNally and USA TODAY based on the judging criteria of creativity/originality, quality of submission, fit to contest theme and public appeal (determined by team votes through May 30). Best of the Road Rally contestants will be notified on May 31.
