DC Vote Rally on Capitol Hill will Demand "No" Vote on Spending Bill
DC Home Rule Violated: Bill bans use of local DC funds to help poor women
WASHINGTON, Dec. 15, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --
WHAT: DC Vote Rally to Defend Home Rule, Urge "No" Vote on Spending Bill
WHEN: Friday, December 16, 11:30 am
WHERE: Outside Longworth House Office Building, Corner of Independence Avenue and New Jersey Avenue, SE
DETAILS:
DC democracy advocates along with elected leaders, will protest the latest assault on Home Rule. A spending bill that is scheduled for a Friday vote in the House includes a "rider" that bars the District from using local tax dollars to fund abortion services for poor women. Supporters of DC Democracy will rally to demand Members of Congress vote "No" on the spending bill. 108 Members of the House signed a letter recently saying they would oppose any spending bill that included policy riders. DC Vote has been contacting those members and others to urge a "no" vote on the spending bill.
DC citizens have no voting member of Congress. Most laws passed by the DC Council are subject to Congressional review, as is the DC budget. Members of Congress have routinely imposed policy riders opposed by the people and their elected leaders. Recently, District leaders and residents have taken more aggressive steps to demand Congress and the President respect DC home rule.
During protests in April and May targeting the same abortion rider, 72 individuals were arrested, including the District's Mayor.
DC Vote is a 501 (c)(3) educational and advocacy organization dedicated to securing full voting representation in Congress and full democracy for the residents of the District of Columbia.
