DC 37 Executive Director Lillian Roberts' Statement Regarding Mayor Bloomberg's Budget
NEW YORK, Feb. 17, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following is a statement by DC 37 Executive Director Lillian Roberts:
"While we're still analyzing the Mayor's budget, we are deeply concerned about its impact on vital public services and the thousands of men and women who provide them.
"From one end of this country to the other, there is a war on public employees, with lawmakers using budget deficits as a smoke screen for attacking our jobs, our pensions and benefits, and the programs and services that sustain working families and our communities.
"To balance New York City's budget the Mayor is still seeking deep concessions from public employees. We have to ask, 'Where are the cuts to billions of dollars in private contracts?'
"The CityTime contract, with its over $80 million dollars of fraud, deception and thievery, is only the tip of the iceberg. We are glad Speaker Christine Quinn is now calling for the city to be more aggressive in its oversight of its 18,000 outside contracts – something DC 37 has long advocated.
"That is why District Council 37 will be holding a hearing on Friday, February 25th at union headquarters to examine every single wasted penny of taxpayers' dollars and make recommendations on how the city can generate a budget that embodies fairness and shared sacrifice."
District Council 37 is New York City's largest public employee union, with 125,000 members and 50,000 retirees.
