Baidu Chief Scientist, Andrew Ng, demoed a new app, Face-It, powered by a deep learning algorithm. The facial mashup app will be released in the US soon.
When asked whether US companies can compete in China, Ng said, "If you flip that question to 'can a Chinese company compete in the US?', the advice is very much the same. For a US company to compete in China, they need tons of local knowledge." Ng continued, "The China market is more different than any other market in the world. If you don't understand the local context, it is very difficult."
The Thought Leader sessions continued with Chris Anderson, co-founder and CEO of 3D Robotics.
"Drones are just smartphones with propellers," Anderson said, emphasizing it is the natural evolution of mapping our world. "At one time, we were deciding between launching more satellites or adding more cell phone towers. Cell phones won, because cell phones scale."
During his Thought Leader session, SnapDeal co-founder Rohit Bansal predicted an even bigger India startup boom coming, saying "India will have dozens of decacorns[1]. Over the next 5-10 years, the businesses that do well are going to be 5 times bigger than they are now."
Former Apple CEO and current co-founder and CEO of Obi Worldphone, John Sculley, shared his vision for well-designed and low-cost mobile phones that would appeal to a growing middle class in emerging markets. "We're focused on growing Obi Worldphone to 70 of the fastest growing markets in the world. These are markets that over the next 36 to 48 months will be making the conversion to low bandwidth to higher bandwidth."
Today, the GMIC Silicon Valley Expo floor opened with booths featuring mobile companies including Liepin, ClicksMob, and all of the G-Startup competition finalists. The winner of the G-Startup competition will be announced on Wednesday, September 30 at 4:55pm during the closing ceremony open to all badge holders.
