Through SafeTLS and the cloud-based infrastructure of the DataMotion Platform, SecureMail becomes the first product of its kind to overcome technical hurdles of opportunistic TLS, effectively leveraging its benefits and eliminating the potential for sending unencrypted messages. From the perspective of compliance and security professionals, SafeTLS increases data protection by transparently integrating security into the recipient experience. With this simplified approach, it is far less likely employees will bypass security and compliance processes to avoid common issues and complaints that recipients encounter when receiving secure email and attachments.
As a result, SecureMail builds upon a reputation for offering the most comprehensive encryption services possible. This is furthered by an even simpler user experience, additional time-savings for message recipients, as well as a greater ability for IT administrators to increase security control and compliance. Furthermore, developers can utilize a comprehensive set of APIs to integrate SecureMail with SafeTLS into mobile, web and desktop applications that need secure messaging and file exchange services.
"DataMotion continues to innovate and deliver technologies that most effectively meet the data 'in motion' security requirements of today's enterprises," said Allan Cowen, CEO of Solantus, a longtime distribution partner and leading provider of technology solutions. "Concerns over data security are at an all-time high and enterprise security professionals need answers. They want the strongest encryption but solutions must be simple so employees won't seek unsafe alternatives that could expose data and ruin a company. SecureMail is not only the 'gold standard,' the hosted SaaS model and on-premise options offer our customers choices to meet their individual deployment timelines, budget and compliancy requirements."
How SafeTLS & SecureMail Works
TLS is a core mechanism to ensure secure transport of an email and its contents. Opportunistic TLS was initially regarded as a popular workaround for traditional secure email solutions, so long as intended recipients could accept TLS connections. The convenience of this approach was undeniable; messages and file attachments appear in the clear in a recipient's inbox, eliminating embedded web links, logins or passwords to view content. However, the downside of opportunistic TLS is that a sensitive message can be sent entirely unencrypted if the recipient system does not support TLS.
Through the existing infrastructure of the DataMotion SecureMail Platform, SafeTLS capitalizes on the attributes of opportunistic TLS while eliminating the drawbacks. It accomplishes this by determining whether or not a recipient will accept TLS before delivering the message. If not, the message won't be delivered in an unsecure manner. Instead, a notification link is sent to the user guiding them to a patented and simple login process on DataMotion's secure web portal to retrieve the message. Additionally, all SafeTLS delivered messages ensure secure responses from recipients via a configurable message footer that contains a link for the recipient to securely reply to the sender, even if they don't have email encryption capability on their device.
"Delivering secure email directly to recipient's inbox as clear unencrypted text – without keys or logins – is a great way to simplify the compliance process," said the CTO of DataMotion, Bob Janacek. "Recipients access secure messages just like any other message, and it only takes a click to reply securely. SecureMail is easily configurable by corporate administrators, so enterprises gain greater control over security and compliance, too. In short, SecureMail combines security with simplicity to make sure that the solution is adopted and relied upon by users."
