Dallas' Sayles Werbner Honored in 2010 Top Texas Verdicts List
DALLAS, May 23, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The Dallas trial law firm Sayles Werbner has been recognized for winning one of Texas' top jury verdicts of 2010.
The firm's successful representation of Commil USA in a patent infringement lawsuit against Cisco Systems Inc. resulted in a $3.7 million jury award that is ranked as the 9th largest intellectual property verdict in Texas last year.
The case, Commil USA LLC v. Cisco Systems Inc., et al., No. 2:07-cv-341, is highlighted in the Top Texas Verdicts of 2010, a publication compiled by the verdict reporting service Verdict Search and distributed by Texas Lawyer newspaper.
Shortly after winning the verdict in May 2010, Sayles Werbner co-founders Richard A. "Dick" Sayles and Mark S. Werbner won a new trial motion based on alleged prejudicial comments made by an attorney for Cisco in front of the jury. The second trial ended with a $63.8 million verdict for Commil in April 2011, and is expected to be one of the year's top jury verdicts in Texas and the entire nation.
"Protecting clients' valuable intellectual property is one of the cornerstones of our practice, and we're extremely proud of the work we did for Commil in both of these trials," says Sayles.
The lawsuit stemmed from allegations that Cisco used a Commil patent without permission. The Commil technology contained in U.S. Patent No. 6,430,395 (the '395 patent) allows wireless devices to move from point to point on a computer network without signal interruption. Prior to this groundbreaking invention, network users experienced frequent signal disruptions resulting in data losses, dropped calls and other errors. Commil filed the lawsuit after discovering that the company's patented technology was being used by a Cisco subsidiary to produce its own Wi-Fi product line.
"It took a team effort to win one of the top verdicts in the state," says Werbner. "We knew from day one that Commil had a solid claim, and the jury's verdict proved it."
Sayles Werbner has an international reputation as a "go to" trial law firm in multifaceted business litigation, intellectual property, patent litigation, life-altering personal injury cases, product safety lawsuits and other areas of the law.
