Dallas Attorney Tom Melsheimer Recognized for Outstanding Legal Writing
DALLAS, Jan. 4, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Editorial staff and advisors at The Green Bag Almanac & Reader have singled out Dallas attorney Tom Melsheimer for excellence in legal writing based on an unconventional legal brief filed on behalf of Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban shortly after the team won the 2011 NBA championship. Mr. Melsheimer is the Managing Principal of the Dallas office of Fish & Richardson.
Described by various media outlets as a "dagger of a brief" and the "Greatest Legal Brief in the History of Jurisprudence," the motion drew headlines nationwide when it was filed only days after the Mavericks beat the Miami Heat to win Dallas' first NBA championship.
Mr. Melsheimer filed the summary judgment motion in response to claims by Ross Perot Jr. and Hillwood Investment Properties that Mr. Cuban had mismanaged the team. The filing included a large photo of a jubilant Mr. Cuban and members of the Mavericks holding the championship trophy.
The use of a photo in such a brief may be uncommon, but Mr. Melsheimer described the decision to highlight the team's championship victory as a virtual no-brainer. The much-heralded motion will be highlighted in the 2012 edition of The Green Bag Almanac & Reader.
In November, a Dallas County judge dismissed the lawsuit filed by Mr. Perot and Hillwood.
