Dallas Arboretum Announces New Exhibit, Wind Sculptures in Motion: The Kinetic Art of Lyman Whitaker
DALLAS, March 1, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden announces the arrival of its new spring/summer exhibit, Wind Sculptures in Motion: The Kinetic Art of Lyman Whitaker. Presented by Reliant, this special exhibit will be on display throughout the gardens April 15 through July 31.
J. Mark Wolf, Dallas Arboretum board chairman, said, "Whitaker is the most recognized creator of kinetic art in the world and takes his inspiration from nature, thus his copper wind sculptures will be a mesmerizing juxtaposition with the natural backdrop of the Dallas Arboretum. It will also be the first time for the Arboretum to display this type of innovative art throughout the 66-acre garden."
Each piece of Whitaker's artwork is organic in nature and responds to the changing currents of the wind, which provides each sculpture's movement. Whitaker hand-produces innovative sculptures with a high degree of mechanical integrity and quality craftsmanship. The sculptures range in height from 5 to 27 feet, and 122 sculptures will be arranged artfully in groupings throughout the garden for viewing.
Whitaker said, "Gardens are a perfect venue for my pieces. Since they are derivative of plant forms, they feel at home among the plants. Gardens are also an excellent place for people to fulfill their need to be in nature, and I am certain that my sculptures will dramatically enhance that connection to nature by capturing the movements of air that surround us all."
Whitaker has been a practicing sculptor for more than 50 years. For the past 30 years, he has focused on creating wind sculptures inspired by nature, the desert and helixes. As a master in the kinetic sculpture discipline, Whitaker's art is known around the world. His work is represented at fine art galleries and in private collections throughout the U.S. and abroad.
The Kinetic Art of Lyman Whitaker is also supported in part by Dave Perry-Miller Real Estate. During the exhibition, the Dallas Arboretum has planned special events that complement this display, so visit http://www.dallasarboretum.org/ for the latest.
