Cylance Scientists to Deliver Machine Learning and Reverse Engineering Sessions at Black Hat USA
Reverse Engineering Tool "Ablation" Will Be Made Open Source During the Conference
IRVINE, Calif., July 28, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Cylance®, the company that is revolutionizing cybersecurity through the use of artificial intelligence to proactively prevent advanced persistent threats and malware, today announced that its Chief Scientist Matt Wolff and Senior Research Scientist Paul Mehta will be delivering sessions at Black Hat USA 2016, and that a reverse-engineering tool called Ablation will be made open-source during the conference. Black USA 2016 will take place July 30 – August 4 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
"We developed CylancePROTECT® to thwart endpoint cyber attacks by preventing malware execution, but another significant part of our commitment involves sharing threat intelligence and tools like Ablation with the security community," said Stuart McClure, president and CEO at Cylance. "All of us at Cylance are pleased that Matt and Paul will be presenting some of our recent findings and a very useful reverse engineering tool at Black Hat USA this year."
As a Black Hat USA 2016 sponsor, Cylance will be demonstrating its artificial intelligence-driven antivirus product CylancePROTECT® in booth 1124. Cylance scientists will lead two learning sessions at the conference:
- Augmenting Static Analysis Using Pintool: Ablation, led by Senior Research Scientist Paul Mehta on August 3, 2016 at 10:20 a.m.
- Applied Machine Learning for Data Exfil and Other Fun Topics, presented by Chief Scientist Matt Wolff on August 3, 2016 at 11:30 a.m.
As Chief Data Scientist at Cylance, Wolff leads the research and engineering efforts for the company's artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to improve the security of computing systems and effectively defend them from malicious actors. A 10-year veteran of the fields of AI and security, Matt was previously a member of the NSA's TAO unit and was awarded a fellowship from the U.S. Department of Defense to research the capabilities of machine learning and its impact in the security domain.
In his role as Senior Research Scientist, Mehta focuses on original research in the area of static analysis, anti-exploitation, and reverse engineering. Mehta previously worked at Accuvant Labs and at Google, where he developed exploitation techniques and advanced memory protections.
About Ablation
Ablation is a tool developed by Mehta to extract information from a process as it executes. This information is then imported into the disassembly environment where it is used to resolve virtual calls, highlight regions of code executed, or visually differentiate samples. The goal of Ablation is to augment static analysis with minimal overhead or user interaction, and it could be used to identify undocumented features in a product given a sample set.
About Cylance Inc.
Cylance is the only company to offer a preventive cybersecurity solution that stops advanced threats and malware at the most vulnerable point: the endpoint. Applying a revolutionary artificial intelligence approach, the Cylance endpoint security solution, CylancePROTECT®, analyzes the DNA of code prior to its execution on the endpoint to find and prevent threats others can't, while using a fraction of the system resources associated with endpoint anti-virus and detect and respond solutions that are deployed in enterprises today.
