Since its founding in 2007, Cycle for Survival has become the fastest-growing* athletic fundraising event in the US. This year, funds raised by Cycle for Survival and its founding partner, Equinox, surpassed the amount raised in 2013 by more than $6 million. In total, more than $51.5 million has been raised in just eight years. To date, Cycle for Survival has funded 85 clinical trials and research studies. Funding allocations from the 2014 events will be announced later this summer.
More than 1.6 million Americans were diagnosed with cancer in the past year, and about half suffer from a rare cancer such as pancreatic, thyroid, brain, ovarian cancer, all pediatric cancers and many more. Because research into many rare cancers is often underfunded, treatment plans are not always available, and patients with those diseases are left with fewer options. Cycle for Survival is helping to fill this funding gap by directing 100 percent of every donation to pioneering rare cancer clinical trials and research studies within six months of the events.
Several celebrities participated in the 2014 events, including Seth Meyers, host of NBC's Late Night with Seth Meyers; Alysia Reiner, Orange is the New Black; Billy Porter, Tony Award-winning star of the Broadway musical Kinky Boots; Carla Hall, co-host of ABC's The Chew; David Alan Basche, The Exes; Ellie Krieger, New York Times bestselling author and host of the Food Network's Healthy Appetite; Ethan Zohn, winner of Survivor: Africa; Jake T. Austin, The Fosters; Kate Flannery, The Office; Brittany Daniel, The Game; Whitney Port, TV personality; Lo Bosworth, TV personality; Nastia Liukin, Olympic gymnast; Paula Garces, All My Children; and Sasha Allen, singer, actress and top finalist on The Voice.
