WOONSOCKET, R.I., June 5, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Larry J. Merlo, President and CEO of CVS Caremark (NYSE: CVS), will be the guest speaker at a meeting of the Detroit Economic Club today. During his remarks, which will take place at the Westin Book Cadillac in Detroit, Merlo plans to discuss the nation's evolving health care system and will detail how CVS Caremark is helping consumers, employers, health plans, physicians and hospitals navigate the changing health care landscape.
"The nation's health care system is in a period of transformative change, which is impacting consumers, employers, health care providers and government," Merlo has said. "As a result, CVS Caremark is evolving as an integrated health care company that is poised and ready to address the cost, quality and access conundrum in health care today."
Merlo will shed light on the many reasons why the nation's health care system is stressed, including an aging population, the prevalence of chronic disease, and increasing medication non-adherence. He will also outline the solutions CVS Caremark offers.
"CVS Caremark is driving innovative approaches to reinventing pharmacy," according to Merlo. "Our 26,000 pharmacists offer our customers expert advice on how to take their medications properly, our Specialty Connect program offers patients choice and flexibility in how they access their specialty medications for complex conditions, and our MinuteClinics offer accessible and affordable care for families."
Merlo also plans to discuss the company's recent decision to stop selling cigarettes and tobacco products at the company's 7,600 CVS/pharmacy locations nationwide by October 1, 2014, a move he says is "not only an important decision for CVS Caremark, but is also an important decision for public health."
Merlo's remarks will be webcast live on the Detroit Economic Club's website, http://www.econclub.org/liveevent.aspx, beginning at 12:30 pm EDT.
