Cure Violence Ranks 14th on 2016 Top 500 Global NGO List
CHICAGO, June 23, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Cure Violence ranks 14th in NGO Advisor's new 2016 report of the Top 500 NGOs in the world, one of the definitive international rankings of non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Cure Violence has been listed in the Top 20 ranking for three consecutive years. This year's ranking is three places higher than in 2015. The full set of rankings is available at www.ngoadvisor.net.
Other NGOs named to the Top 20 include Doctors Without Borders, Oxfam, Save the Children, Grameen Foundation and Mercy Corps.
Cure Violence (www.cureviolence.org), founded in 1995 by Gary Slutkin, M.D., professor of international health and infectious disease at University of Illinois at Chicago, and formerly of the World Health Organization, works to reduce violence in communities around the world using disease control and behavior change methods. It has demonstrated its effectiveness in stopping lethal violence, particularly shootings and killings. Cure Violence works to reduce violence in the areas of gang and youth violence, as well as cartel, tribal, election and prison violence, and is increasingly being consulted on violent extremism.
Multiple external evaluations have shown the Cure Violence approach reduces acts of violence 40% to 50% in the first year, and up to 70% over a two- to three-year period. Furthermore, reductions in violence occur almost immediately when implemented in a community.
Cure Violence is building an international movement of leaders and partners to reduce violence through a public health approach. The organization has partners on four continents, including more than 50 communities in 31 cities.
"We're very grateful for this ranking and see it as a recognition of both the importance of the work of reducing violence and the impact of the public health approach in addressing the problem," Slutkin said. "As we are largely a guiding and training organization, we give great credit to our many partners in the U.S. and around the world who are doing such great work in making their communities safer by implementing health methods to treat violence."
NGO Advisor researches, evaluates and ranks NGOs "to showcase the best practices and newest ideas in the nonprofit sector." It develops the rankings to present the findings to a large international audience of donors, volunteers, journalists, researchers, diplomats and others. NGO Advisor's methodology is described at www.ngoadvisor.net/methodology.
