CRANBURY, N.J., May 5, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- CURE Media Group, the nation's leading consumer digital and print media enterprise focused entirely on patients with cancer announces that Sara Sargente, RN, ONC, of Orange Medical Center in Middletown, NY was chosen as the 2017 CURE® Extraordinary Healer® for Oncology Nursing, which honors nurses who have dedicated their careers to helping patients with cancer, their families and their oncology co-workers.
Each year to celebrate oncology nurses, CURE® magazine gives readers a unique opportunity to honor a special oncology nurse by nominating one through an essay that describes the compassion, expertise and helpfulness exhibited by their nominee. Sargente was recognized at the Extraordinary Healer® awards reception last evening that was held in conjunction with the Oncolgy Nursing Society's (ONS) Annual Congress in Denver, Colorado. Sargente and the winning essay will be featured in an upcoming issue of CURE® magazine
In accepting the award, Sargente said she considered herself a representative of "all oncology nurses out there who all know that oncology nursing is a passion and a love done with compassionate hands and hearts for the real heroes: the patients."
She added that, "now that my dad was recently diagnosed with malignant melanoma, I truly see the importance of what we do as nurses. I dedicate this honor to my dad and to all of our patients going through their cancer journey."
"Sara Sargente, RN, ONC, exemplifies what it means to be an extraordinary healer who goes above and beyond the call of duty to help patients, their families and healthcare co-workers," said Michael J. Hennessy Jr., president Michael J. Hennessy Associates, parent company of CURE Media Group. "Oncology nurses have very challenging jobs that blend specialized medical knowledge with a passion to provide comfort, education and advocacy to patients undergoing complicated, and sometimes long-term, treatments for the disease."
Since the inception of the Extraordinary Healer Award for Oncology Nursing in 2007, more than 1,000 nurses have been nominated. The winners and essayists honored over the past ten years have included men and women, adults and children, representing a variety of cancer centers and hospitals in seven different states. The other 2017 finalists were Jessica Kobs, BSN, RN and Janet Schadee, RN, MHA.
"The CURE Extraordinary Healer Award has been recognizing outstanding oncology nurses for their exceptional care and commitment for more than a decade. Amgen is proud to have supported this important honor since its inception," said Richard Paulson, VP & GM, Oncology Marketing, at Amgen. "We join with thousands of dedicated oncology nurses to congratulate Sara Sargente, RN, ONC for her remarkable dedication to patients. Oncology nurses play a critical role in helping to improve the lives of patients by supporting them and their families in their fight against cancer."
