Cucalorus Film Festival Announces Early Picks -- Showcasing Dancers, Activists, Musicians, Blue Velvet and Mr. Norwood Cheek
WILMINGTON, N.C., Sept. 7, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Cucalorus Film Festival will stage its 17th annual cinematic celebration November 10-13th, 2011 in the historic port city of Wilmington, NC. Early selections were announced recently and include Sundance NEXT category winner "to.get.her" by Erica Dunton and the 11 Israeli Oscar nominated drama "Restoration" by Joseph Madmony. Paddy Considine's dark and challenging directorial debut "Tyrannosaur" fronts the UK Spotlight program. Cucalorus launches the NC Filmmaker Retrospective to showcase groundbreaking artists who've had a lasting impact on film culture in North Carolina. The inaugural retrospective examines the inventive stylings of Norwood Cheek, a Chapel Hill native recognized around the world for his inventive music videos and short films. Staying true to its roots as a micro-retreat for independent filmmakers, Cucalorus also announced three films as part of the growing Works-in-Progress program: "Whistling For Sheep" about Ovarian Cancer, "Bringing it Home" about industrial hemp, and "An American Promise" about the achievement gap in education. Cucalorus screens more than 120 independent and international films, but breaks away from the traditional fest setup with events like Dance-a-lorus, Visual Soundwalls (music video installation) and a sneak preview of "Blue Velvet: The Musical." The festival's core venues include Thalian Hall, City Stage Theater, Screen Gems Studios, the Soapbox and Jengo's Playhouse.
