WASHINGTON, Feb. 4, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The China Trade Task Force today released a provocative new campaign ad calling on all presidential candidates to stand up for American workers in the face of predatory Chinese job hacking.
The 30-second ad features past comments on China from former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Senator Ted Cruz (R, Texas), Senator Marco Rubio (R, Florida), and Donald J. Trump on the importance of protecting American industries against China's aggressive and illegal trade subsidies. The advertisement also features workers from Century Aluminum's smelter in Hawesville, Kentucky – the only facility in the United States that produces the high purity aluminum required to build critical weapons systems such as the F-35 fighter.
"Illegal Chinese aluminum subsidies are destroying the lives of tens of thousands of hardworking Americans who are losing their jobs across the country. And at a time when our nation's presidential candidates profess a need to 'get tough on China,' they are suspiciously silent on how to combat Chinese job hacking," China Trade Task Force Executive Director Will Dempster said. "We created this ad to demand that our leading presidential candidates take a stand on behalf of American workers and hold the Chinese accountable for their illegal trade practices. Failing to take action now not only condemns over 10,000 workers to unemployment, but also imperils American national security."
Global aluminum prices are at a six-year low, yet China has increased aluminum production by over 32% this year alone. China has doubled down on production by offering state-owned domestic aluminum producers a range of illegal subsidies such as interest free loans, debt forgiveness and preferential regulatory treatment. These subsidies directly contradict the commitments China made when it joined the World Trade Organization (WTO).
CTTF has been an active and influential force in the fight against illegal Chinese aluminum subsidies. Last year, over 16,000 Americans signed a petition on Change.org calling on U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman to take meaningful action to combat Chinese aluminum subsidies and protect American jobs. The United Steelworkers Union joined the Task Force in November 2015.
