CTSI Launches Defense Energy Technology Challenge, Solution Matching Program

HONOLULU, July 19, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- In conjunction with the Asia Pacific Clean Energy Summit on September 13, 2011, the Clean Technology and Sustainable Industries Organization (CTSI) is hosting a defense-focused challenge -- the Defense Energy Technology Challenge.  The program, based on CTSI's annual Utility Technology Challenge, is designed to pair companies developing defense targeted energy solutions with partners, including: U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Department of Agriculture and U.S. Army Corp of Engineers.  

One of the challenges facing new technologies in the highly competitive and infrastructure-intense industry of clean energy is the lack of connectivity between top-level solutions and the test beds that can prove and adopt them.  Leveraging the Department of Defense's long history as a proving ground for innovation, the Defense Energy Technology Challenge will bring together technology companies with the military partners seeking new clean energy solutions.

"While ample prospects exist for interaction between the United States government and start-up companies, navigating a way into them can be challenging for both," said Patricia Glaza, CEO of CTSI.  "We hope this program will create a new bridge between innovative companies and the U.S. military."

Key solution areas for this year's challenge include: biofuels, energy efficiency, smart grid and renewable energy; however, all clean technology companies are invited to enter.  Companies participating in the Defense Energy Technology Challenge will have their solutions reviewed by a defense/governmental/expert group.  Organizations with the top solutions will present to a panel with officials from the Army, Navy, Air Force and Army Corp of Engineers on September 13th during the Asia Pacific Clean Energy Summit. In addition to the presentation to the military panel and direct feedback they provide, selected finalists will have the opportunity to meet and network with additional potential partners and customers in attendance including Lockheed Martin, AECOM, SAIC, the Hawaiian Electric Company, Sempra Generation, and Alstom.
