CSX Welcomes Public Participation in Police Re-Accreditation Process
JACKSONVILLE, Fla., July 16, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- CSX's police team will meet with representatives of the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) as part of its re-accreditation in law enforcement standards. CSX operates one of two accredited railroad police forces in the country and first received this designation in 2009.
The CALEA Law Enforcement Accreditation is an internationally recognized set of standards comprised of best practices and benchmarks for law enforcement agencies focusing on professionalism and preparedness. The re-accreditation process includes visits by CALEA representatives to the company's headquarters and field locations, a public access telephone call-in session, and a public hearing during which members of the community are invited to comment on CSX's police activities.
"The CSX Police Department serves to protect CSX personnel, critical infrastructure, customer property and the public to preserve the safety and efficiency of rail transportation in America," said John Walsh, CSX director of police and infrastructure protection. "We interact closely with the communities we serve and welcome the public's participation and feedback as part of the re-accreditation process."
Like other major railroads, CSX operates its own certified police force with commissioned railroad police officers strategically deployed across its network. Officers frequently partner with local, state and federal law enforcement as well as first responders and public safety agencies in the 23 states CSX serves. In addition to its traditional law enforcement duties, the police department includes several specialty units including rapid response, crime investigations and canine teams.
CALEA's re-accreditation procedures include a detailed review of the police department's strategic plans, human resources, equipment, evidence and property control, training, investigative procedures, and communications, among other areas.
The public is welcome to call in, toll-free at (877) 541-8531 from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, July 22, to comment on CSX law enforcement activities and/or participate in a public hearing that day at 3:00 p.m. at the Jessie Ball duPont Center located at 40 East Adams Street, Room 201, Jacksonville, FL 32202.
