CSX Added to Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes
JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Sept. 9, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- CSX Corporation (NYSE: CSX) today announced that it has been added to the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI) in recognition of its leadership in creating and adopting sustainable practices. CSX is an industrial transportation sector leader among 143 companies named to the North America list this year.
"Commitment to sustainable practices is a core focus for both our employees and our operations," said Michael J. Ward, chairman, president and chief executive officer. "Transparency and accountability are critical to our business strategy, and being named to this prestigious index highlights our dedication to long-term sustainable performance."
The DJSI, a partnership between the Dow Jones Indexes and SAM Sustainability Assessments, are the first global and regional indexes to track the financial performance of the leading sustainability-driven companies. Each year, the DJSI invites the world's 2,500 largest companies to report on their sustainability performance across economic, environmental and social criteria. The indexes are a reflection of the overall economic performance of companies that have placed a large emphasis on environmental sustainability and social responsibility.
CSX's achievements in environmental performance include reaching ahead of schedule the company's voluntary goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by eight percent and launching a "Trees for Tracks" program to plant one tree for each of the 21,000 miles of CSX track. These successes were accomplished while the company delivered its best year ever in safety, operating income, operating ratio and earnings per share. To foster employee contributions to economic and community success, CSX has implemented an Emerging Leaders talent recognition and development program and contributes thousands of employee volunteer hours to local and national charitable organizations through CSX Service Days.
