SAN MARCOS, Calif., Aug. 21, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In an ongoing effort to offer educational programs that meet a clear workforce need, California State University San Marcos' College of Business Administration and Extended Learning division have developed two new offerings in Accounting and Water Leadership & Management that provide students with the theoretical knowledge and practical training to enrich their careers.
The Water Leadership & Management certificate is designed for those currently working, or interested in working, in the water management industry and prepares middle level managers for leadership roles. Fall courses include Water Resource Planning & Development, Leadership in Water Organizations, and both Human Resource Management and Financial Management for the Water Industry. Classes meet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at the San Marcos campus and the certificate caps off with a practicum in the spring semester.
"We're at a crossroads in terms of water management training here in California," said Mike Schroder, Dean of Extended Learning at CSUSM. "To keep the water and wastewater industries performing at peak levels, it is imperative that we provide the next generation of leaders with the multidisciplinary training needed to effectively address the demands of this indispensible and rapidly evolving business sector. The new Water Leadership & Management program here at CSUSM fits the bill."
The new Accounting program was initially developed in response to the 150-unit state of California licensure requirements for the CPA designation that took effect in January 2014. Applicants for the license must now supplement the 120-unit bachelor's degree requirements with 30 semester units of accounting, ethics and business related courses that are available through CSUSM. Accounting courses that meet the requirements are offered weekday evenings this fall and include Tax Research, Current Issues in Accounting and Assurance Services and Information Technology.
"These courses comprise the first stage of CSUSM's new Professional Certificate in Accounting which is scheduled to launch in the spring," said Dr. Alan Styles, chairman of the Accounting Department at CSUSM. "All of the courses in this program offer a strong mix of both theoretical and practical knowledge and are designed for the student who wants to move on and eventually assume a leadership role in the field."
Free information sessions for the Accounting program will be offered on campus on August 29 and September 5. An information session for the Water Leadership & Management program will be held on September 9.
