"CSCMP's 50-year anniversary is an important milestone in our ongoing journey that underscores our relevancy as a professional supply chain organization," said Rick Jackson, executive vice president, Mast Global Logistics, and chair of CSCMP's board of directors. "Since our inception, we've held fast to the goal of providing valuable and meaningful opportunities for our members. We have evolved from a small US-based group interested in sharing best practices in distribution and transportation to an internationally recognized leader in supply chain management, with members from more than 62 countries."
CSCMP was founded in 1963 as the National Council of Physical Distribution Management (NCPDM) by a group of educators, consultants, and managers who envisioned the integration of transportation, warehousing, and inventory as the future of the discipline. In 1985, NCPDM's name was changed to the Council of Logistics Management (CLM) to represent the evolution of physical distribution into logistics management.
The decision to rename the organization to CSCMP in 2005 was made to meet the changing needs of its members, whose responsibilities had expanded within their companies and the profession. With its new name, the organization became more inclusive to those who were playing ever more critical roles in the supply chain. Since then, the organization has provided its members with enhanced content that incorporates not only logistics, but procurement, manufacturing operations, and sales and marketing functions. CSCMP members are now exposed to more voices and different perspectives within the industry to help them understand the end-to-end supply chain.
To celebrate the organization's anniversary, special events and promotions are planned throughout the year. At CSCMP's Annual Global Conference, October 20-23, 2013, in Denver, Colorado, USA, there will be videocasts of interviews with the individuals who were instrumental in pioneering the profession.
"We are proud to be celebrating CSCMP's Golden Anniversary," said Rick Blasgen, president and chief executive officer of CSCMP, "and honored to have served the global supply chain community for the past five decades. The founders of this organization and the leaders who followed literally created the profession we know today as 'supply chain management.' This profession has become critical to organizations around the world, as well as to countries and their economies. Today, we practice a noble discipline that offers outstanding career opportunities to men and women alike with the future holding much promise."
CSCMP's wide variety of products, programs, and services, such as global conferences, online and on-site education, SCPro certification™, career center, workshops, and supply chain publications are internationally recognized as leading tools for the profession. "As we look to the next 50 years," Jackson added, "our mission will remain unchanged. We will continue to focus on the core priorities that drive our greatest values: education and networking. CSCMP will create and offer training programs that are challenging, cutting edge, and sought after. We will build even more robust networking opportunities that span a multitude of trades. We will continue exploring the benefits of being fast and agile and staying in step or ahead of our external environment."
Since 1963, the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) has been the leading worldwide professional association dedicated to education, research, and the advancement of the supply chain management profession. With more than 9,000 members globally, representing business, government, and academia from 62 countries, CSCMP members are the leading practitioners and authorities in the fields of logistics and supply chain management.
