Cruise Industry Supports Efforts to Eliminate Trade in Illegal Wildlife
CLIA Participates in United for Wildlife Transport Taskforce
WASHINGTON, Nov. 23, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) is actively engaged in efforts to reduce or eliminate trade in illegal wildlife. As a member of the United for Wildlife International Taskforce on Transportation and the Illegal Wildlife Trade, CLIA is part of a prominent group of transportation and conservation organizations developing recommendations for how the transport industry can help shut down illegal wildlife trafficking trade routes.
"CLIA is especially honored to share the cruise industry's perspective on reaching and educating the public, in partnership with our esteemed colleagues on the Transport Taskforce," said Cindy D'Aoust, CLIA Acting CEO. "We all share United for Wildlife's desire to break the chain between suppliers and consumers of illegal wildlife products and create a worldwide atmosphere of zero tolerance for facilitating illegal wildlife trade."
In announcing the formation of the Taskforce, Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge and President of United for Wildlife, explained that the Taskforce would "work with the transport industry to develop recommendations for how it can play its part in shutting down wildlife trafficking trade routes; with the sole intention that the implementation of these recommendations will lead to a tangible and significant reduction in the illegal wildlife trade."
The Taskforce, chaired by The Rt. Hon William Hague MP, former British Foreign Secretary and chair of the London Conference on the Illegal Wildlife Trade, brings together high-level leaders from the transport industry with representatives from conservation organizations. The next meeting will be hosted by the Royal Foundation for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry in London on December 9, 2015. Recommendations and commitments are expected to be forthcoming in the near future.
