SAN FRANCISCO, March 3, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- CREDO, the mobile carrier with a conscience, announced that it will donate more than $150,000 to Americans for Tax Fairness, Detention Watch Network and Rainforest Action Network. Throughout March, CREDO invites its members and the public to vote on the distribution of funds at CREDO Donations.
Since 1985, CREDO has donated more than $83 million to progressive organizations fighting for women's rights, economic justice, voting rights, climate justice and more. By choosing CREDO products and services, members generate donations for these causes. Their everyday acts of commerce support CREDO Action, a social change network with 5 million activists, and CREDO Donations, the company's philanthropy program.
CREDO gives monthly donations to support nonprofits when action is most critical. This month, voters can take a stand for economic justice, immigrant rights and climate justice.
"The White House is determined to sacrifice the poor to the top one percent, violate immigrant rights and inflict environmental destruction on a global scale," said Ray Morris, CEO of CREDO. "That's why we're proud to support Americans for Tax Fairness, Detention Watch Network and Rainforest Action Network. These organizations are exposing and challenging the worst abuses of this administration, and we want to help them succeed."
Americans for Tax Fairness (ATF) is a diverse campaign of national, state and local organizations united in support of a tax system that works for all Americans. A leading advocate for progressive tax reform, ATF works to ensure that corporations and the wealthy cannot evade U.S. taxes through corporate inversions and other dodgy practices. Notably, ATF's efforts to block the 2016 Pfizer-Allergan inversion saved U.S. taxpayers up to $35 billion and built support for broader anti-inversion legislation. Funding from CREDO will enable ATF to produce reports, fact sheets and op-eds that are essential to their campaigns.
Detention Watch Network (DWN) is the only national coalition working exclusively to expose and challenge the injustices of the U.S. immigration detention and deportation system. In recent years, DWN has published multiple investigative reports documenting abuse, gross negligence, mismanagement and profiteering within the system. The reports have garnered attention from media and policymakers and have helped lead to the introduction of a bill in Congress to ban perverse incentives for private prison companies. CREDO will fund DWN teams that support coalition members working to end family detention, close detention centers and raise awareness of abuses in the system.
Rainforest Action Network (RAN) campaigns for the forests, their inhabitants and the natural systems that sustain life by transforming the global marketplace through education, grassroots organizing and nonviolent action. In recent years, RAN's efforts helped block the Keystone XL pipeline, stopped new agribusiness and mining in the Indonesian rainforests, and convinced more than 20 global banks to stop financing coal mining. With CREDO funding, RAN will address the most critical root causes of climate change by cutting financial flows to the fossil fuel industry.
"Americans for Tax Fairness is proud to work together with CREDO, who plays a critical role in the fight to make sure the rich and corporations pay their fair share of taxes," said Frank Clemente, Executive Director of Americans for Tax Fairness.
"CREDO's support of Detention Watch Network could not come at a more critical time. With a record number of people behind bars in immigration detention, CREDO is providing crucial resources to a nationwide network of advocates in the fight for racial justice and dignity for immigrants," said Ana K. Carrion, Co-Director at Detention Watch Network.
"CREDO is a crucial and committed partner in the fight for the planet and for our future," said Lindsey Allen, Executive Director of Rainforest Action Network.
