Creatures of the Garden to Be Featured at Governor's Residence Open House
HARRISBURG, Pa., Aug. 8, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Governor's Residence gardens will be open to the public for the "Creatures of the Garden" open house on Sunday, Aug. 11, as part of several free, "Second Sunday" events scheduled throughout the summer.
The family-friendly event will showcase creatures of all shapes and sizes that inhabit gardens in Pennsylvania. Visitors will have an opportunity to observe live animal demonstrations, hear educational presentations and participate in hands-on activities.
"The Governor and I are excited to open the Governor's Residence for this unique, educational program," First Lady Susan Corbett said. "'Creatures of the Garden' will allow visitors to see a variety of native animals up close and to interact with local experts."
Visitors can also learn from many other nature organizations that will be on hand with information and demonstrations. They include the Backyard Beekeepers Association, Monarchs Need Milkweed, Ned Smith Center for Nature and Art, Penn State Extension Master Gardeners of Dauphin County, Pennsylvania Game Commission and ZooAmerica North American Wildlife Park.
At 2 p.m., Jack Hubley, host of "A Wild Moment," will offer an educational program titled "Critters Beyond Your Back Door." It will feature mammals, birds of prey and snakes that are native to Central Pennsylvania.
Each second Sunday through September, visitors are invited to explore the Governor's Residence gardens from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The final "Second Sunday" event will take place on Sept. 8.
