Creative Uses of AZEK® Cellular PVC Trim Becoming Widely Accepted for Historic Exteriors

SCRANTON, Pa., June 6, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- D&E Construction of Boston, Mass., is kicking up its creativity by using AZEK® Trim, a cellular pvc product to upgrade historic outdoor spaces, as the wood replacement material extends life and reduces maintenance.   According to the firm's owner Ergun Merdin, "AZEK is the only exterior trim product we use and AZEK Deck is our preferred brand in the low-maintenance decking category."  Merdin says that over the years, his firm has been phasing out wood trim and educating clients on the benefits of using pvc trim on their homes because it replicates the historic profiles so accurately, but without the time, labor or costs associated with maintenance.   Merdin also uses AZEK Deck and AZEK Porch on his homes wherever possible to reduce maintenance on outdoor living spaces.

"Because AZEK Trim can be milled so easily, we've been making this transition very successfully," said Merdin.   D&E does a majority of work on Greater Boston's historic homes, which are known for their Victorian mouldings and "gingerbread."  Merdin says the sizes and shapes of many Victorian profiles are no longer readily available and require custom milling.  "We are able to mill exact replicas of any type of moulding in our shop out of AZEK and offer this service to our clients," he said.  

"For one Victorian home, we had to come up with a lattice design that complemented the floral theme around the exterior, so we drew the design on paper and used routing machinery to transfer it to AZEK Sheet," he explained.  AZEK Trim in addition to board profiles and dozens of mouldings, is also conveniently available in sheet sizes of 4 ft. X 8 ft.  Merdin said he made sure to use a high quality carbide router bit at a low rpm to prevent heat build-up that might mar the delicate trim piece.  "We now offer this as an AZEK template design to our clients who want to have a more upscale, low-maintenance lattice rather than a cheap looking, flimsy vinyl option," he said.

Cellular pvc has become a viable and long-lasting alternative to wood in many historic districts for both public and private structures, because funding is difficult enough to find for restoration, let alone continued upkeep.  AZEK products provide the perfect blend of old meets new.
