NEW YORK, Nov. 10, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Education funding platform DonorsChoose.org announced today a new way for donors to identify and support classroom project requests from schools serving military communities. Donors can now use the school type filter "serving military families" on DonorsChoose.org to search for funding requests from U.S.-based public school teachers at schools on military bases, schools that report to the Department of Defense, and schools where 20% or more of the student population lives on or near a military base.
To mark the introduction of this new school type on DonorsChoose.org, Craig Newmark Philanthropies has pledged $1 million to support classroom projects from schools serving military communities, a majority of which will be used to match citizen donations to these projects. Beginning November 10, every donation to classrooms supporting military communities will be matched, up to $700,000. Through these donations, teachers get much needed resources for students, such as books for the classroom library, technology, art supplies, science kits, and other resources.
"Military families give up a great deal in the service of our country, and we should do what we can to stand beside them and offer them a hand," said Craig Newmark, founder of craigslist and Craig Newmark Philanthropies. "Craig Newmark Philanthropies is proud to support the work that DonorsChoose.org is doing to help provide military kids with the quality education that every child deserves."

"We owe a special debt to the children of our nation's military families, who have to live apart from their parents for months at a time or relocate frequently to new communities," said Charles Best, founder of DonorsChoose.org. "We so appreciate the support of Craig Newmark Philanthropies, which will bring new educational resources into schools serving military families."
