WASHINGTON, May 13, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Wow! This year's carbon monoxide poster contest received about 700 posters from middle school students. That's a record!
Posters came from all over the United States, and even from U.S. military bases overseas! Each and every poster had an important safety message: Stop the "invisible killer." The "invisible killer" is carbon monoxide (CO).

More than 150 people die every year from unintentional, non-fire CO poisoning associated with consumer products, such as furnaces, fireplaces and portable generators.
With statistics like that, you need to follow these safety tips to protect yourself:
- Have a professional inspect your fuel-burning appliances every year.
- Have a CO alarm on each level of your home and outside sleeping areas.
- Use portable generators outside only at least 20 feet from the house, never inside the house, garage, basement or shed. CO from portable generators can kill you in minutes.
Take these steps today to stay alive.
