Cox Enterprises Donates $50,000 to American Red Cross for South Georgia Tornado Victims
ATLANTA, Jan. 26, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Cox Enterprises, in partnership with The James M. Cox Foundation, announced today a combined cash donation of $50,000 to the American Red Cross to assist the relief and recovery efforts of the communities affected by the recent tornadoes in South Georgia. The National Weather Service confirmed more than 24 tornadoes in the area, which left a path of destruction.
"We've been based here since 1939 and want to do our part to help our fellow Georgians," said Cox Enterprises President and CEO John Dyer. "Many of our employees have family and friends who were impacted by these devastating storms. The Red Cross is mobilizing supplies and volunteers to help aid recovery, and we believe it's important to support them in this time of need."
Cox Enterprises is Georgia's largest private company and has operations in Atlanta, Athens and Middle Georgia. The company also recently completed construction of its Golden Isles Conservation Center, which is in Southeast Georgia.
"The generosity of companies like Cox Enterprises, especially during the height of winter storm season, is of tremendous help to the American Red Cross," said Andy Brubaker, executive director, American Red Cross Southwest Georgia. "Being hit by tornadoes twice in one month is exceptionally difficult for any community. We are stretched thin this time of year as we continue our work to provide victims of the storms and local disasters with emergency food, clothing, shelter and other necessities."
Cox has a history of supporting its communities and employees during times of need. Created in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, the Cox Employee Relief Fund (CERF) provides financial assistance to employees facing a financial hardship due to a natural disaster, catastrophic injury/illness or loss of an immediate family member. Since 2005, CERF has provided more than $7 million in assistance and helped over 2,500 employees.
