CHESAPEAKE, Va., April 27, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Cox Communications received the prestigious 2011 Whitney M. Young, Jr. Award at the April 21 Urban League of Hampton Roads annual banquet. The award is presented to an international or national company that has made significant progress towards diversifying its workforce at the management and non-management levels.
"Cox strives to be a corporate leader in diversity and civic and community involvement – it is part of who we are and how we live and work," says Gary McCollum, Cox Virginia's Sr. Vice President and General Manager. "We are proud to receive this year's Whitney M. Young, Jr. Award."
The dinner honors the life and legacy of Young, the former executive director of the National Urban League who brought the League into the civil rights arena during the 1960s. This year's banquet featured Emmy award winning BET broadcaster Ed Gordon as Master of Ceremonies, who was joined by local WVEC 13 news anchor Vanessa Coria.
