G1GABLAST is the First Gigabit-Speed Residential Internet Service to be Offered in Rhode Island
WEST WARWICK, R.I., Nov. 3, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Cox Communications announced today that its gigabit Internet service for residential customers is now available at several properties in downtown Providence, with more offering the service in the coming months. Mayor Jorge Elorza and local developers joined Cox in announcing gigabit Internet in the city during an event at the Westminster Lofts' Peerless building.
Cox's "G1GABLAST" Internet marks the first time gigabit Internet speeds have been available to residences in Rhode Island. Currently available to Cox customers living in the Foundry's Sharpe building (25 Holden Street), G1GABLAST will soon be available in the Peerless (150 Union Street) and Kinsley buildings (334 Westminster Street).
These buildings represent an important initial step in Cox's planned rollout of gigabit Internet. This includes offering G1GABLAST at three additional Cornish Associates-owned properties downtown as they become available as residences.
"We are excited to be the first to offer gigabit speeds in Rhode Island," said Jay Allbaugh, senior vice president and region manager, Cox Communications. "Our latest investments and the deployment of the fastest speeds available are powering economic growth and development in the communities we serve."
Gigabit Internet allows users to download from the web at speeds of 1,000 megabits per second. This means 100 photos can be downloaded in three seconds, and less than a minute for a large HD movie file.
"As we look to the future for Providence, it is important to leverage the latest technology to optimize our environment for residents and businesses," Elorza said. "The gigabit speeds available in these residential buildings are one more asset Providence can boast about to attract people to live, work and play here. Thank you to Cox, Cornish and the Foundry for partnering to enhance our city's offerings."
"Downtown Providence is a place for the creative, hard-working individuals driving the local economy," said Buff Chace, founder and managing partner, Cornish Associates. "We want their homes to reflect the innovative spirit that powers the city."
Where available, G1GABLAST is an additional $35 per month when added onto Cox's most popular service bundles. The service is available for $99 per month as a standalone. G1GABLAST also includes the latest high-speed WiFi router, one terabyte (one million megabytes) of cloud storage, Cox Security Suite and Family Protection and 10 email boxes each with 15 gigabytes of storage. Consumers also can learn more at cox.com/giglife.
Cox is expanding the availability of residential gigabit Internet speeds in Cox locations across the country. The company has already launched G1GABLAST service in 10 states and will have gigabit speeds in all of its markets by the end of 2016. Cox has been deploying gigabit speeds to businesses for more than 10 years.
While focused on bringing gigabit speeds to its residential customers, Cox remains committed to offering access and choice. The company has continually increased speeds on all Internet tiers, raising them more than 1,000 percent over the past 14 years. Later this year, the speeds for Cox's Ultimate tier customers will increase.
