Cox Communications Celebrates Black History Month throughout Virginia
CHESAPEAKE, Va., Feb. 13, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Cox Communications will celebrate African-American culture and contributions throughout February in recognition of Black History Month. Cox will be highlighting culturally relevant programming available OnDEMAND, featuring programming selections that focus on African-American history, documentaries that shed light on African-American triumphs, historical dramas, feature films, comedy and music. Additionally, Cox will be supporting events in Hampton Roads, Northern Virginia and Roanoke to recognize and celebrate African-Americans and their culture.

In Roanoke, Cox is a proud sponsor of the Urban Professional League's (UPL) Community Achievement Awards. The UPL focuses on promoting professionalism, networking, and community service amongst young African American professionals throughout the Roanoke and New River Valleys. This event will take place on Thursday, February 20, 2014 at 7pm in Fitzpatrick Hall. Awards will be presented to three outstanding African-Americans, recognizing their exceptional contributions to education, business and community.
Fairfax County, in partnership with Cox Communications, will be presenting a Black History Month Celebration at the Fairfax County Government Center on Friday, February 21, 2014. Celebration of Black History Month will begin at 5:45 p.m. with a family-friendly reception featuring choirs, mimes and remarks from community leaders. The main program, a keynote address by Mark Moore of The Mark & Brenda Moore and Family Foundation and a performance by Gye Nyame African Cultural Dance Company and Kukuwa, LLC, will follow at 7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
In Hampton Roads, Cox will be partnering with TV One and the Urban League of Hampton Roads to host an NAACP Image Awards watch party. This event will take place on Saturday, February 22, 2014 at the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum in Portsmouth. Awards presented by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People will showcase and honor outstanding people of color in film, television, music, and literature. TV One launched in 2004 and offers a broad range of real-life and entertainment-focused original programming, classic series, movies and music designed to entertain, inform and inspire a diverse audience of adult Black viewers.
