Kassalen will share her inspiring journey as a young female engineer, demonstrating to students that the sky is the limit with an education and career in STEM. Kassalen's accomplishments include:
- Representing Covestro on the historic Solar Impulse (www.solarimpulse.com) mission to fly around the world without a drop of fuel.
- Providing on-the-ground support for Solar Impulse as the youngest member and only U.S. female engineer on the ground crew.
- Being named to the 2017 Forbes 30 Under 30 (http://www.forbes.com/profile/paige-kassalen/) in Energy.
"The need for a strong STEM workforce is growing, with studies projecting more than one million additional STEM-related jobs in the next decade," said Jerry MacCleary, president of Covestro LLC. "Through Covestro's support of important education initiatives, we are able to cultivate a passion in students for STEM careers—inspiring them to become the innovators of tomorrow."
The Covestro PRSEF engages more than 1,000 students each year in grades 6 through 12 from 105 schools across southwestern Pennsylvania and Maryland. Students will present their projects March 31, and the awards ceremony will be held April 1.
In 2015, Covestro became a sponsor of Carnegie Science Center and the title sponsor of its annual science fair. This sponsorship is part of the company's U.S. corporate social responsibility initiative, i3 (ignite, imagine, innovate), which focuses on employee volunteerism, STEM education and corporate giving.
About i3 (ignite, imagine, innovate):
i3 (ignite, imagine, innovate) is Covestro LLC's companywide corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative that aims to spark curiosity, to envision what could be and to help create it. Built on the three pillars of philanthropy (i3 Give), employee volunteerism (i3 Engage) and STEM education (i3 STEM), i3 seeks to create sustainable and lasting impacts. i3 Give is designed to innovate corporate philanthropy strategies that combine both human and financial resources to build stronger communities. i3 Engage re-imagines the way employees from for-profits and nonprofits engage with one another for more effective outcomes. And, i3 STEM ignites young minds to become the innovators of tomorrow through support of hands-on, inquiry-based STEM education, workforce experience and employee volunteerism.
