Covanta Congratulates Honolulu for Being Named 'Most Livable City' in America

This prestigious award recognizes H-Power's role as a creative solution and critical component of Honolulu's solid waste management plan, limiting the City's reliance on the island's only municipal landfill and reducing Honolulu's dependence on imported oil. The H-Power facility, located in Kapolei, on the island of Oahu, plays an integral role in Honolulu's achievement of 80 percent diversion of its waste stream from landfill while supplying renewable energy for nearly 10 percent of Oahu.

As the centerpiece of Honolulu's sustainable solid waste management system, H-Power serves the municipal solid waste disposal need of more than 850,000 residents and more than six million visitors to the island every year. The Energy-from-Waste facility, owned by the City and County of Honolulu and operated by Covanta, processes up to 3,000 tons per day of municipal solid waste, generating up to 90 megawatts of energy.  

H-Power is also the only operating Energy-from-Waste facility in the United States that combines the best of refuse-derived fuel technology and mass burn technology, allowing the facility to manage a variety of types of waste for the City and County of Honolulu. Furthermore, the system protects the environment and the economy by:

• Saving more than 500 acres of landfill space since its inception, through reducing the volume of waste by 90 percent
• Avoiding significant greenhouse gases that are created when landfilling waste
• Producing up to 10 percent of Oahu's electrical needs, helping Hawaii to achieve an ambitious goal of 100 percent renewable energy by 2045
• Recovering ferrous and non-ferrous metals from the waste stream, generating up to $5 million annual gross revenues
