Covanta Announces New Agreement with the City of Boston for Sustainable Waste Disposal
BOSTON, June 25, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Covanta (NYSE: CVA), a world leader in sustainable waste management and renewable energy, today announced a new agreement with the City of Boston for sustainable waste disposal. The five-year contract will send approximately 140,000 tons of waste per year to Covanta's Energy-from-Waste (EfW) facilities in Massachusetts. The new agreement begins July 1, 2014.
"We're very pleased to have been chosen yet again by the City of Boston to provide reliable and sustainable waste disposal services at our Energy-from-Waste facilities. This new contract term continues our current 14-year long standing partnership," said D. Scott Peterson, market area vice president, Covanta. "By choosing energy-from-waste, the City is able to generate clean energy from solid waste and reduce greenhouse gas emissions that would have been created had they chosen to send their waste to landfills."
Covanta's EfW facilities provide Massachusetts communities, including Boston, with an environmentally superior alternative to landfilling their municipal solid waste and generate enough electricity to power 120,000 homes in the state. Recovering energy from waste after efforts to reduce, reuse and recycle is a critical component of sustainable waste management. For every ton of municipal solid waste processed at EfW facilities, greenhouse gas emissions are reduced by the equivalent of approximately one ton. This is due to the avoidance of methane from landfills, the offset of greenhouse gases from fossil fuel electrical production, and the recovery of metals for recycling.
"Covanta has been a very good and reliable partner," said Michael Dennehy, interim commissioner, Public Works. "Their generous support over the years for programs such as Boston Shines and the consistent dependable disposal options Covanta provides the City of Boston have had a positive impact on the cleanliness of Boston neighborhoods."
Covanta owns and/or operates four EfW facilities and seven transfer stations in Massachusetts. In total, these facilities process more than 2 million tons per year of solid waste generated from residential and commercial customers throughout the state.
