Council on Foreign Relations Scholar Urges World to Give Mexico's Economy a Second Look
MEXICO CITY, June 29, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following is being released today by Marca Pais – Imagen de Mexico:
When it comes to determining which country, Mexico or Brazil, is doing better economically, the United States should take a closer look at Mexico. That was the conclusion of a recent piece published by the Council on Foreign Relations.
The article, written by Shannon K. O'Neil, CFR's Douglas Dillon Fellow for Latin America Studies, stated that:
The conventional U.S. wisdom today is that Mexico is a problem, and Brazil is an opportunity. The reality is that while Mexico faces serious challenges, the United States shouldn't count it out. And, while Brazil does present real promise, there are serious issues it has yet to take on.
The article highlighted a number of positive statistics about Mexico's economy including:
- Mexico is a much larger export and manufacturing-led economy than Brazil.
- Mexico is second largest export market for the United States, which earned about $163 billion last year compared to $35 billion with Brazil.
- According to the World Bank's Doing Business index, Mexico ranks 35th globally, the highest in Latin America
