Cosmed Group, Inc. Settles Patent Dispute

JAMESTOWN, R.I., June 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Cosmed Group, Inc., an industry leader in steam pasteurization technologies announces settlement of its patent dispute with Napasol AG.

Cosmed has developed technology around natural vacuum and steam processes. Cosmed was awarded a United States Patent for its efforts in 2004. Additional patents are pending.

Comed filed suit against Napasol for infringement of its patent rights in U.S. District Court, Eastern District of California in June 2009. The case was later consolidated and moved to U.S. District Court, Northern District of Iowa. In exchange for settling Cosmed's infringement claims, Napasol has agreed to license Cosmed's patent rights.

The technology covered by the Cosmed patent is used both inside and outside the United States. There is a growing interest in the technology as consumers and regulators seek a more natural process to insure the safety of food and other articles. Recent product recalls affecting the nut, seed and spice industries has heightened the awareness of the food safety risks associated with contamination issues. In particular, uncooked food products have the potential to be contaminated with pathogenic microorganisms. To insure the safety of such food items, Cosmed's technology delivers a homogeneous steam pasteurization treatment throughout the product that provides remediation of the risks associated with such pathogens, without harming delicate products such as herbs, spices, seeds and nuts.
