CoSentry Deploys Advanced UPS Technology at Sioux Falls, SD, Data Center
SIOUX FALLS, S.D., Feb. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- On February 20, 2010, CoSentry completed installation of an Eaton PowerWare 9395 Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS). The 500 kVA unit is the first large-scale deployment of this high efficiency, inherently redundant UPS technology in the state of South Dakota, according to Gary Johnson of Northern Power Technologies, the South Dakota Eaton Representative. This Eaton Green Solution has been available in Europe for four years and installed throughout the US over the last three years.
"We conducted a thorough review of available technologies from leading UPS vendors and the Eaton 9395 was the clear winner," said Brian Driscoll, CoSentry's Site Manager. "The modular design provides inherent redundancy, enabling CoSentry to absorb core component losses (e.g. inverter and rectifier) while maintaining full UPS capability. Should we need to expand capacity to maintain an N+1 condition, we simply add another module – each of which has full access to all independent battery strings."
CoSentry is the largest data center services provider in the region and has recently upgraded all of their facilities in response to the needs of their growing client base. Power and cooling interruptions now account for a significant percentage of data center outages and business downtime. By hardening the power infrastructure and creating a modular design, CoSentry has dramatically reduced the possibility of service interruptions.
"What impressed us was the quality of the design and the ease of the installation," said Tom Smithback, president of Electric Supply, who was selected as the electrical contractor. "Given the advantages of this design I expect we will see other manufacturers move to modular designs in order to remain competitive."
CoSentry has been recognized for their "green" initiatives and has made several energy efficiency improvements throughout their network.
"We have worked with CoSentry for over 10 years now," said Larry Serbousek, principal at Eaton partner IET America in Omaha, NE. "It is refreshing to work with an innovative company that recognizes the practical benefits of advanced power systems. CoSentry is willing to embrace where power delivery technology is headed instead of clinging to the less efficient and less capable products of the past. The Eaton 9395 is 2-3% more efficient at all load levels, a significant green improvement over competitive products today."
CoSentry clients are also directly benefiting from the upgrade.
Jeff Best is the director of IT at CSD in Sioux Falls, SD. Jeff said, "We have used the CoSentry data center for both our voice and IT infrastructure for over three years. Even though we have never lost power during that time, we are excited about this UPS upgrade and the other continual improvements that CoSentry makes. We really benefit from this location being part of the Resiliency Network that CoSentry has built across the north central region due to depth of engineering and operation expertise they have developed."
