Case in point: In October 2017 The Department of Justice announced two New York based construction companies had agreed to pay more than $3 million to settle allegations that they violated the False Claims Act by improperly obtaining federal set-aside contracts designated for service-disabled veteran-owned (SDVO) small businesses. To qualify as a SDVO small business, a service-disabled veteran must own and control the company. In this instance the United States alleged that the construction companies recruited a service-disabled veteran to serve as a figurehead of a 'sham' company to get an unfair advantage on bidding for federal construction projects. The companies were in fact successful in obtaining numerous federal contracts. As mentioned in this instance, the whistleblower will receive $450,000.
