Corporate Library Services Facing Twin Pressures of Cost Containment and More Requests for Services

CHAPEL HILL, N.C., July 12, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Pharmaceutical and Medical Device organizations invest heavily in their corporate library and information center services. Faced with the pressures of reductions in corporate funding and increases in internal requests for services, library services leaders are struggling to effectively provide the value needed to ensure their organization's success in the marketplace.

To help library and information center leaders better understand the scope of services currently offered in the pharmaceutical and medical device sectors, research and consulting leader Best Practices, LLC conducted a primary research study on the topic. The resulting benchmarking study, "Pharmaceutical Library Services: Staffing, Resources and Activities Critical to Corporate Libraries," helps executives to identify the strategies necessary to ensure effective and beneficial information services.

In the study, participating companies reported they frequently use vendors to supplement staff in providing selected services. However, they rarely outsource more than 25 percent of any library service, according to the study. No service was 100 percent outsourced at any participating company. Services most often provided with vendor support include end user training, analysis of research results, maintenance of library catalogs, and current awareness bulletins.

In addition to utilizing vendors, respondents listed many forces of change that are likely to heavily impact information services in the next one to three years.
