TUCSON, Ariz., Oct. 6, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- World Cord Blood Day (November 15th, 2017) is a free event, open to the public. In addition to events being held around the globe, the highlight of the day will be a virtual conference led by renowned cord blood researchers and transplant doctors – pioneers and visionaries in modern medicine. Save the Cord Foundation is proud to announce the following speakers for this year's program (in order of appearance): Dr. Eliane Gluckman, Dr. Joanne Kurtzberg, Sharon Miller, Dr. Filippo Milano, Dr. Colleen Delaney, Dr. Maria Craig and Dr. Wise Young.
Cord blood contains precious stem cells. Yet, cord blood is still thrown away as medical waste in the majority of births worldwide. The goal of World Cord Blood Day is to make parents and the healthcare community aware of the need to preserve this vital medical resource. The official World Cord Blood Day virtual conference will include introductory presentations for expectant parents and the general public, as well as several academic lectures specifically designed for health professionals, cord blood banks and biobanks.
Attendees will learn about the more than 35,000 cord blood transplants performed since 1988 used to treat over 80 life-threatening diseases including sickle cell anemia, thalassemia, lymphoma and leukemia. In addition, attendees will learn about exciting advances in the emerging field of regenerative medicine to potentially treat autism, cerebral palsy, diabetes, spinal cord injury and more. A vibrant social media campaign (#WCBD17) will also help build cord blood awareness across the globe.
Organized by Save the Cord Foundation, World Cord Blood Day will take place on November 15th, 2017. This year's event is officially sponsored by Quick Specialized Healthcare Logistics, recognized leader in medical shipping and logistics. Inspiring Partners for this inaugural event include the Cord Blood Association, Be the Match (NMDP), World Marrow Donor Association (WMDA-Netcord), AABB and FACT.
