Corboy & Demetrio Files Lawsuit Against Chicago Public Schools in Bullied Student's Suicide

The Chicago law firm of Corboy & Demetrio has filed a wrongful death lawsuit in the suicide of a 12-year-old Chicago Public Schools student.

CHICAGO, Oct. 9, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Corboy & Demetrio has filed a wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of the parents of 12-year-old McKenzie Phlipot, a CPS sixth grader, who hanged herself on May 8th, after a year and a half of being bullied at the Helen C. Peirce School of International Studies in Chicago's Andersonville neighborhood.

The lawsuit claims that Chicago Public Schools and the Chicago Board of Education, both named defendants, failed to protect McKenzie after her mother Beth Martin contacted the school on several occasions to report the bullying and that the school failed to prevent further bullying, which eventually led to McKenzie's death.

"The school was aware of this bullying and did not follow the steps mandated by CPS code to stop this behavior," said Corboy & Demetrio Managing Partner Robert J. Bingle, who is representing Martin in the lawsuit.

The lawsuit claims that as a result of bullying, McKenzie sustained physical and emotional injuries that led to her suicide and that such conduct was in disregard of CPS policy.
