CooperVision Employees Celebrate Earth Day 2019 with Special Events Around the World
Environmental-Focused Activities Put a Spotlight on Sustainability
PLEASANTON, Calif., April 18, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- CooperVision employees at the company's sites around the world are celebrating Earth Day 2019 with several programs and projects, further enhancing the company's ongoing sustainability initiatives.
"Being environmentally conscious doesn't stop with the innovative, green-focused advancements we've made to our facilities, many of which have contributed to recent LEED and BREEAM certifications," said Alba Figueroa Lebron, who leads CooperVision's global sustainability efforts. "It extends to giving employees the chance to host activities that help bring our ideals into the communities in which we operate, making an even greater impact. Our Earth Day 2019 programs are a great representation of employees' commitment to making the world a better place."
In Juana Diaz, Puerto Rico, where CooperVision manufactures contact lenses including the popular MyDay® and Biofinity® brands, the company recently hosted more than 300 public high school students to promote the wonders of scientific careers, with an emphasis on sustainable practices. "Science and Technology Exhibition: A Look at the Planet" was organized in partnership with EcoExploratorio: the Science Museum of Puerto Rico. CooperVision employees and science educators from the museum came together for the two-day event, which included creating on-site chemistry, biology and environmental science laboratories plus a manufacturing tour.
Beginning next week, all three of the company's Rochester, N.Y. region sites are participating for the fourth consecutive year in the E-Scrap for Camp project, in conjunction with electronics recycling company Sunnking. Each facility will collect a range of electronics from employees, friends, and family, which are then safely and responsibly recycled. Every pound gathered results in a donation to Camp Good Days, helping improve the quality of life for children, adults, and families whose lives have been touched by cancer. Last year, CooperVision's efforts alone resulted in 7,000 pounds of recycling, sending two children with life-threatening illnesses to camp.
Multiple other events are planned for next week as well in Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, and Rochester, including adopt-a-tree projects, employee and children environmental photography and art contests, green trivia contests and educational seminars, and even hosting a travel company to promote environmental tourism.
CooperVision environmental initiatives are focused on saving water, conserving energy; reducing, reusing and recycling resources; and empowering people within the company and the communities in which it operates. Learn more at coopervision.com/sustainability.
