'Contagion of Violence' model used to address urban violence in US provides solutions in Iraq, London and beyond
National Press Club panel examines disease-like spread of violence in 'Arab Spring' and 'London Riots'
WASHINGTON, June. 26, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As part of the National Press Club's Newsmakers series, a panel of experts will speak about the disease-like transmission of violence and ways to interrupt or prevent violence in various contexts, including the "Arab Spring," the London riots and U.S. gang violence.
WHAT:
Dr. Gary Slutkin has long advanced the theory that violence behaves like a disease. He is an expert in infectious disease control and epidemiology previously with the World Health Organization, who will present the "Contagion of Violence" model. Zainab Al-Suwaij and Jason Featherstone will provide real-world historical context and examples of the contagion of violence and its successful interruption. Al-Suwaij will speak from her experience in Iraq and with the "Arab Spring," while Featherstone will speak from his experience in London and with the Tottenham Riots.
