Consumers Energy Employees Volunteering to Support Flint
Weeklong Effort Providing Water to Homes, Follows Recent Financial Help
FLINT, Mich., March 22, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- About 75 Consumers Energy employees are giving their time this week to ensure that Flint residents have clean water to drink, part of an ongoing effort this year by the company to help the Michigan community.
"Our employees across Michigan want to show support for Flint with our actions," said Dennis Dobbs, Consumers Energy's vice president of enterprises project management, engineering and services. "Many of us live and work in Flint, and we are committed to making an impact that continues to build a stronger community."
Employees this week are handing out water door-to-door and volunteering at locations where water is being distributed. The effort continues volunteer activities that already have been ongoing in recent months.
Consumers Energy, employees and its charitable foundation have been supporting Flint in other ways:
- The Consumers Energy Foundation made a recent $25,000 contribution this year to the Community Foundation of Greater Flint for early childhood education. In addition, the foundation is matching donations by employees and retirees up to another $25,000. The new financial commitment will support early childhood education programs, which have been a focus for the foundation and which will be especially relevant for the Flint community following the water crisis.
- The foundation contributed $25,000 in November to the United Way of Genesee County to purchase 2,500 water filters.
- Consumers Energy has encouraged employees to volunteer through the American Red Cross, which is helping coordinate relief work in Flint. Employees who volunteer in groups can receive $250 Caring for Community grants that the Consumers Energy Foundation will make in their names to support the Red Cross.
'We are encouraged to see so many employees step up to help Flint, and we are proud to play a role in meeting the community's needs," Dobbs said. "We want to do our part to help the communities we serve today and for years to come."
Consumers Energy, Michigan's largest utility, is the principal subsidiary of CMS Energy (NYSE: CMS), providing natural gas and electricity to 6.7 million of the state's 10 million residents in all 68 Lower Peninsula counties.
