Conquering Supermom: The Kryptonite for Everyday Mothers
SAN RAMON, Calif., Nov. 25, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Every mother wants to be the best parent she can be. However, between juggling a marriage, career, and children, trying to handle everything at once can become a daunting task. In a study conducted by the American Sociological Association, mothers who buy into the "supermom" myth are more likely to be depressed than those that don't. Although the solution may seem simple, changing one's frame of mind can be difficult.
Financial planner and author Michelle Perry Higgins has learned how to conquer the supermom syndrome and wants to share her learnings with other women. In her new book, Stocks, Bonds, and Soccer Moms; 7 Steps to a Balanced Life, Ms. Higgins shows readers how buying into the supermom myth prevents her from maximizing her potential.
"Society tells us that we, as mothers, should be able do everything yet sacrifice nothing," she says. "Trying to be supermom is unhealthy and leads to emotional dysfunction." She admits that her relationships and work life began to suffer from the stress of trying to balance everything. "I was trying to fulfill an unrealistic ideal of what I felt my role as a mother was supposed to be," she reveals. "It took a long time for me to see that living up to the popular notion of the supermom was definitely not a good thing."
In addition to de-bunking the supermom myth, Ms. Higgins' new book also contains simple strategies to reduce stress, get rid of guilt and facilitate team work in the family. It is available on bookstore shelves December 1st.
"Instead of driving yourself crazy trying to be supermom," Ms. Higgins says, "my book shows you how to understand what's going on, and how to achieve better balance and more happiness in your life."
