MDM&C's Appellate Practice Group was established soon after the Firm's founding in 1983 by William T. McElroy, a former New Jersey Appellate Court Judge. Current members of the practice group include several highly regarded attorneys and former members of the judiciary; notably Ronald J. Riccio, former Dean of Seton Hall Law School, as well as Justice Zarella's former colleague on the Connecticut Supreme Court, retired Justice C. Ian McLachlan.
Together with Justice McLachlan and MDM&C attorney Daniel J. Klau, Justice Zarella will further strengthen the professional depth of its appellate practice, which provides representation to parties and amici curiae, as well as discrete appellate services for attorneys, including advice regarding issue identification and strategy, rules and procedures, brief writing and oral argument preparation and presentation. The practice group also provides guidance to trial counsel on specific appellate cases during trial.
Justice Zarella also joins MDM&C's highly regarded ADR Practice Group that consists of several litigation veterans, including former Dean Riccio, and four other former members of the judiciary. In addition to Justice McLachlan, that group includes Dennis M. Cavanaugh, who served as a Judge of the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey; and Thomas W. Cavanagh and Lawrence M. Lawson, both of whom served as Judges in New Jersey Superior Court.
The Firm's ADR Practice covers more than a dozen industries on a national and international basis, handling arbitration, discovery disputes, case management, internal investigations as well as mediation. Its lawyers act as neutrals, as well as preparing and assisting clients who participate in ADR.
MDM&C Managing Partner, Edward B. Deutsch, said, "For almost two decades, Justice Zarella has been a major voice on the Connecticut Supreme Court. We are honored to have such a highly respected and experienced member of the judiciary join our Firm. Justice Zarella will be a valuable addition to both our Appellate and ADR practice groups." Mr. Deutsch also noted that, "The Firm intends to continue to build its professional capabilities in these disciplines, serving our clients as well as attorneys seeking assistance from seasoned counsel."
A Massachusetts native, Justice Zarella was in private law practice from 1977 to 1996, and a partner in the Hartford firm of Brown, Paindiris & Zarella. He served as a Judge in the Connecticut Superior Court from 1996 to 2000, and then as an Appellate Court Judge until his appointment to the Connecticut Supreme Court. He currently resides in Essex, Connecticut.
