Connecticut home to six of the nation's top truck bottlenecks

ARLINGTON, Va., Feb. 12, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Transportation Research Institute today released its annual list highlighting the most congested bottlenecks for trucks in America, with six of those locations in Connecticut.

The 2019 Top Truck Bottleneck List assesses the level of truck-oriented congestion at 300 locations on the national highway system. The analysis, based on truck GPS data from nearly 1 million heavy duty trucks uses several customized software applications and analysis methods, along with terabytes of data from trucking operations to produce a congestion impact ranking for each location. ATRI's truck GPS data is used to support the U.S. DOT's freight mobility initiatives. The locations detailed in this latest ATRI list represent the top 100 congested locations.

"ATRI's annual analysis is an excellent barometer of the value of highway investment," said Motor Transport Association of Connecticut President Joe Sculley. "The New Haven location, number 56 on this year's list (which used 2017 data), dropped 12 places from last year's list (which used 2016 data) after the complete implementation of the I-95/I-91 interchange and Q Bridge construction. The data show that highway investment equals improved freight flow for all the goods that Connecticut citizens demand on a daily basis."

The six bottlenecks in Connecticut are:

No. 14 Hartford: I-84 at I-91
No. 43 Stamford: I-95
No. 47 Norwalk: I-95
No. 56 New Haven: I-95 at I-91
No. 64 Waterbury: I-84 at SR 8
No. 74 Bridgeport: I-95 at RT 8

"ATRI's research shows us where the worst pain points are – but they are far from the only ones. This report should be a wakeup call for elected leaders at all levels of government that we must act quickly to address our increasingly congested highway system," ATA President and CEO Chris Spear said.
