WASHINGTON, Oct. 5, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Burke & Herbert Bank announced Connect Our Kids as the donation recipient of their "Scores for Kids" Program. Through this sponsorship program with NBC Sports Washington, the broadcast partner of the Washington Capitals, Burke & Herbert Bank will donate $100 for every goal scored by the Capitals during the 2017-2018 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season to assist Connect Our Kids in our mission to change and enhance the foster care system.
More than 400,000 U.S. children are in the foster care system. Each year, over 20,000 kids age-out of the system. By age 26, 66% of foster kids will have been homeless, incarcerated or dead. "The numbers are astounding. Foster kids are trapped in a broken system," said Dr. Jennifer Jacobs, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer at Connect Our Kids. "The American people have the power to change the way we address this unnoticed national crisis."
Connect Our Kids, a privately funded non-profit organization, is working on developing a vital technology tool needed for those in the trenches of our nation's foster care system to use in finding families for foster kids. The organization is relying upon the support of the community for the funding needed to achieve this important mission.
In addition to providing Connect Our Kids with a big assist, the "Scores for Kids" donation from Burke & Herbert Bank helps jump start the organization's nationwide fundraising efforts. This month marks the start of the Give BIG America™ campaign, a grassroots campaign designed to raise awareness of the need to help foster kids in America and to raise funds to support the development of the technology needed to assist. Throughout November, volunteers across the country will work to shine a light on America's foster children by donating their time, talent, or treasure. Additionally, the Give BIG America campaign aims to collect in-kind donations for six partner organizations that work directly with over 3,000 foster children.
