WASHINGTON, Oct. 1, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Physician Hospitals of America (PHA) has awarded the 2015 PHA President's Award to the Honorable Sam Johnson, U.S. Congressman for the Third District of Texas, in appreciation of his exceptional dedication to ensuring patients' access to high-quality medical care; and for his service to both entrepreneurial medicine, and to the more than 250 hospitals with physician ownership in particular. Dr. R. Blake Curd, President of PHA, in a recent visit to Congressman Johnson's office, presented the award as a token of PHA's appreciation. "There has been no staunch supporter of PHA and our efforts to provide quality care for our patients. Please accept this gracious and heartfelt thank you for your tireless effort to repeal Section 6001 in the Healthcare bill." At the ceremony, Congressman Johnson accepted the distinction and vowed to forge ahead for physician-owners.
Congressman Johnson is a decorated war hero, having served 29 years in the United States Air Force. He flew combat missions during both the Korean and Vietnam Wars and spent almost seven years as a prisoner of war in Hanoi, North Vietnam. Johnson has represented the Third District of Texas since 1991.
In February, the congressman introduced and advocated for the "Patient Access to Higher Quality Health Care Act of 2015" in the U.S. House of Representatives. As a key member of the House Ways and Means Committee, he has taken a leadership role in alleviating burdens of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) on American businesses and taxpayers, and in providing relief from provisions of the act that have placed onerous restrictions on the expansion of physician-owned hospitals.
In accepting the award, Johnson commented, "It is truly a privilege to accept this President's Award and to be your ally in Congress." A strong advocate of free enterprise, he said, "Competition drives innovation, and when it comes to healthcare it is the patient who benefits. I am proud to support our physician-owned hospitals."
