Congressman Fattah Urges Recess Appointment to NLRB
WASHINGTON, March 26 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA) issues the following statement concerning vacancies on the National Labor Relations Board:
"One important lesson drawn from this week's passage of healthcare and student loan reform is that when President Obama's good-faith efforts at bipartisanship are rebuffed, the imperative remains to act decisively and do what is right.
"The recess appointment of Craig Becker to a critical vacancy on the National Labor Relations Board is one of those imperatives. Craig Becker, an eminently qualified labor attorney, has been denied an up-or-down vote by partisan forces in the Senate. The NLRB, the agency charged with protecting the rights of working Americans, has been hamstrung by Republican obstructionism, with only two active members on the five-person board.
"The President has the Constitutional right to make recess appointments. Even Chief Justice John Roberts, not considered a friend of the interests of working people, has raised the issue in the Supreme Court on whether the NLRB can properly function, and wondered why no recess appointments have been made.
"The work of the NLRB is too important to fall victim to silly Senate politics. I call on the President to do the right thing, right now. Use your recess appointing power and seat Craig Becker immediately."
