Congressman Fattah to Honor Local Vietnam Medal of Honor Recipient at Philadelphia VA Hospital Renaming
The Congressman will speak at the ceremony Saturday to rename the VA Hospital in honor of Corporal Michael J. Crescenz; Fattah introduced the legislation in Congress and led the bipartisan effort to rename the facility
WASHINGTON, May 1, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Tomorrow, Saturday, May 2, Congressman Fattah will join hundreds in the community at the formal renaming of the Philadelphia VA Medical Center in honor of Philadelphia's only Medal of Honor recipient from the Vietnam War, Corporal Michael J. Crescenz. As lead sponsor of the legislation to rename the hospital after Crescenz, Fattah will deliver remarks and address the crowd on Crescenz's legacy.
Originally introduced in 2013, Fattah worked with all of the members of the Pennsylvania Congressional delegation, including Congressmen Bob Brady (PA-01), Pat Meehan (PA-07), Mike Fitzpatrick (PA-08), and Senators Pat Toomey and Bob Casey, to pass the legislation in both chambers of Congress. The bill, officially redesignating the facility as the "Corporal Michael J. Crescenz Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center," was signed into law by President Obama in December 2014.
"This celebration is a long time coming and I could not be more proud of the efforts of so many individuals across this community who played an integral role in honoring Corporal Crescenz and working tirelessly to put the motions in place to rename our local VA hospital in his honor," Congressman Fattah said. "Today we commemorate the legacy of one of Philadelphia's heroes; a man who selflessly sacrificed his life to ensure the safety of his fellow soldiers. Now, Crescenz's memory—and the stories of all veterans in the Commonwealth—will live on through the halls of this building every day."
The Philadelphia VA Medical Center is only the third VA medical center to be named in honor of a Medal of Honor recipient.
